Sarah E. McHugh

In whatever medium it is that Sarah is working with, the making of art is for her about the knowing and understanding of how a thing or subject translates or transforms into a personal meaningful message, visually, tactilely, emotionally, appealing to the senses.  About her art, Sarah says, “ The allure and wonder and physicality of working in a variety of mediums to resolve aesthetic considerations, studying the way light and atmosphere as well as surfaces in our environment have become my vocabulary, a challenge that never repeats itself.  It heals and defines the spirit, a passion I hope my art communicates to others.”

A graduate in Art Education from SUNY Buffalo, Sarah taught art in both upstate New York and the New York City school systems for 13 years including teaching a ceramics program at Stony Brook University on Long Island, A most crucial and poignant influence on her art came from her semester abroad with a full course of study in Art and History at The University of Siena, Italy.

Graduate studies at Pratt, Hunter College with continued painting programs at The National Academy of Design and The Art Students League provided her with the exposure to a variety of influences, methods and philosophies that have been infused into her art.

Sarah’s work has been exhibited in New York City at The ABC Gallery, The Metropolitan Museum of Art employee show, The Gracie Square Art Show, The Creative Center for People with Cancer and at the exhibit she curated entitled “The Power of Exploration” held at The Park Avenue Presbyterian Church.

In 2005 she had her first solo exhibition entitled “Theme and Variation” at The Gallery at Port of Call in Warwick, New York where she currently resides. She has received awards for her work at The Annual Lycian Center event for The Warwick Art League and The Annual Ringwood Manor Artists Association of Arts as well as from The Orange County Art Federation and at The Bertoni Gallery in Sugar Loaf.

Her work is also on continuing exhibition at St. Anthony’s Hospital in Warwick, NY

She has recently completed a large painting commission for St. Luke’s Roosevelt Hospital In New York City.

She is a member and treasurer for The Warwick Art League and Coordinator of The Warwick Valley Artists Open Studio Tour.Coming through to the other side of some very difficult times, found her leaving the city to reside in Warwick, NY.  At present, given the opportunity again to participate in stimulating projects through Community 2000, such as organizing The Warwick Valley Artists Open Studio Tour, the feeling of connectedness to this new home reveals constant discovery.
